Afternoon delight: sweet Biscottini

In Novara in the Piemonte region of Northern Italy there’s a little bakery where golden, crisp, light-as-a-feather biscottini have been made since 1852 using a 16th century recipe created by the nuns in the 1500s to bake biscuits for the Pope.

While the walls and spaces retain the essential structure of the 17th-century garden at Avebury, the planting isn’t original. I do love a walled garden though and there are some interesting features like this stone well. Room with pretty view of the gardens. Inside the 17th century threshing barn at Avebury. Beautifully constructed, I could happily move in. The Neolithic henge of Avebury consists of three stone circles, constructed over several hundred years in the third millennium BCE. Two smaller circles are located within a huge outer circle. It’s known that trees ‘talk’ to each other through their roots. At Avebury four fine beech trees interlink like old friends. Their roots are spread far and wide rather like a nest of communication cables, and their leafy boughs co-mingle overhead in a canopy of vibrant green effusion. Awesome nature. Avebury Manor in Wiltshire dates back to the 16th century. The Grade I listed building was the subject of a BBC series The Manor Reborn in 2011 whereby the house was reimagined with different rooms furnished to reflect times in which people lived here, from the Tudor period until the 1930s. Intense. The blues. Once upon a time.
